A Traveling Pipefitter is a skilled tradesperson responsible for installing, assembling, and maintaining piping systems in various industrial, commercial, and residential settings. This role requires extensive travel to different job sites, often working in collaboration with construction teams to ensure the efficient and accurate installation of pipes and related components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Pipe Installation: Install, align, and secure pipes, fittings, and fixtures using hand tools, welding equipment, and other specialized tools according to blueprints, specifications, and building codes.
- Layout and Measurement: Accurately measure, cut, and thread pipes using various cutting tools and machinery. Interpret blueprints and layout plans to determine pipe configurations, ensuring proper alignment and fitting.
- Welding and Joining: Weld, braze, solder, and cement joints to connect pipes and related components. Employ welding techniques to fuse pipes securely, maintaining structural integrity and leak-free connections.
- System Testing: Conduct pressure and leakage tests to ensure the integrity of installed piping systems. Identify and rectify any issues or leaks promptly, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Collaboration: Work closely with construction teams, project managers, engineers, and other tradespeople to coordinate tasks, troubleshoot problems, and ensure seamless integration of piping systems within larger construction projects.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, regulations, and industry standards to prevent accidents, injuries, and environmental hazards during pipefitting activities. Promote a culture of safety within the team and on job sites.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Perform maintenance and repair work on existing piping systems, identifying and addressing issues such as corrosion, leaks, and clogs. Replace or repair damaged sections of piping as necessary.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work performed, including measurements, materials used, and any changes made to original plans. Provide progress reports and documentation to project managers and supervisors.
- Travel: Travel extensively to different job sites, often requiring overnight stays away from home. Adapt to different environments, work conditions, and project requirements.
- Continuous Learning: Stay up-to-date with industry trends, new technologies, and advancements in pipefitting techniques. Seek opportunities for professional development and training to enhance skills and knowledge.
Education and Experiences
- HS Diploma or GED Certificate
- Vocational School Training or Apprenticeship Training preferred
- Travel Requirement: 80%.
- Knowledge of how various piping systems and equipment are installed and operate.
- Knowledge of how relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints and other pressure supporting and controlling devices are installed and how they operate to control increases and decreases in pressure, flow, circulation and expansion in the systems.
- Ability to plan and lay out the installation, modification and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment.
- Ability to lay out and install various kinds of piping, risers, mains and branch outlets at the proper elevations and incline.
- Ability to interpret and execute drawings and blueprints.
- Ability to use mathematics to lay out angles, arcs and circles.
- Skill in any of the accepted trade methods and techniques, for example, figuring pipe joint, take outs, aligning pipes, valves, fittings and joints for accurate match and installing proper braces and supports to control movement and vibration and allow for expansion and contraction.
- Ability to plan and lay out the needed routing, placement, pitch, incline and elevation of systems and equipment.
- Ability to test systems and equipment after completing work for proper circulation, flow, pressure and leak-free joints.
- OSHA 10 hour certified.
- Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Work experience in the Aluminum, Steel, Forging, Ductile Iron,
- Petrochem, Foundry or Automotive industries is a plus.
