Assembles by hand or using hand tools or portable powered tools or operates equipment as necessary to produce or process products. Assembles products according to customer's needs, following blueprints and other written and verbal specifications. Creates plan for assembly procedures, following specifications and using knowledge gained by experience. This position is viewed as skilled and is distinguished from the Product Assembler (Bench) as it requires more training and experience, generally one to two years, to perform the activities. The assembler will be responsible for assembling any number of products according to customer specifications and company standards. This type of work will be done on the shop floor.
Duties & Responsibilities: All duties and responsibilities are essential functions of the position. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
- Products may include but are not limited to small products, light subassemblies, and/or complete units of a smaller size.
- Loads and unloads previously setup machines, such as arbor presses, drill presses, taps, spot-welding machines, riveting machines, milling machines, or broaches, to perform fastening, force fitting, or light metal-cutting operation on assembly line.
- May be assigned to different workstations as production needs require or shift from one station to another to reduce fatigue factor.
- May be part of a crew and assist skilled operators in performance of skilled function.
- May work at bench as member of assembly group that processes or assembles one or two specific parts and passes unit to another worker.
- Operates production line equipment of a level of complexity requiring the specified training or assembling products, units, machines, equipment, and/or sub-assemblies that are larger, heavier, and/or more complex than those assembled by Product Assembler (Bench).
- Mounts and connects auxiliary, mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic or hydraulic equipment; cuts and fits pipe and tubing.
- Removes small quantities of metal, using hand files or portable grinders, to clean parts or to produce close fit between parts.
- Drills, taps, or reams holes, using drill press or portable drill.
- Aligns components, and bolts, screws, or rivets them together, using hand tools or portable powered tools.
- Installs moving parts, such as shafts, levers, or bearings, and works them to test free movement.
- May bend and install pipe for hydraulic systems.
- May align and mesh gears in gearbox to assemble system of gears.
- May operate drill presses, punch presses, or riveting machines to assist in assembly operation.
- May test or assist in testing operation of completed product.
- Pulls parts for products based on bills of material
- Assemble, test & maintain documents of products based on requirements
Education and Experiences
- High School/GED
- Previous experience in manufacturing or assembly environment
- Ability to read and understand drawings and assembly instructions
- Experience using basic hand tools and small machinery
- Experience using overhead cranes and hoists preferred
- Mechanical aptitude required to diagnose and solve problems that arise during manufacturing processes
- Experience using a tow motor is preferred
