Introduction

Fives Intralogistics Corp. is seeking a Mechanical Applications Engineer to lead mechanical estimating and deliver competitive, technically sound solutions for rebuilds, retrofits, modernizations, and service agreements across our installed base. 


Reporting to the Director of Client Services, this role partners with Services operations, engineering, sales, and project management to translate customer requirements into accurate scopes, costs, and labor plans that mitigate risk and accelerate proposal delivery.

 

 

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY
The Mechanical Applications Engineer serves as the technical lead for all mechanical estimating activities within the Services team. The role evaluates customer requirements and develops competitive, technically sound solutions for rebuilds, retrofits, modernizations, and support agreements for the Fives installed base. This individual collaborates with Services operations, engineering, sales, and project management to validate feasibility, mitigate risk, and produce accurate cost and labor estimates from concept through final acceptance. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Customer Requirements & Solution Development
    • Analyze customer requests, RFQs/RFPs, and specifications; develop solutions that meet technical, operational, and commercial objectives.
    • Participate in customer meetings with Sales to gather and clarify technical requirements.
    • Ensure proposed technical solutions are sound, competitive, and accurately reflected in proposal deliverables.
    • Support bid/no bid decisions through feasibility and risk evaluation.
    • Occasional travel to customer sites to understand conditions, gather requirements, and validate mechanical needs for requested scopes.
  • Estimating & Risk Evaluation
    • Prepare detailed time, cost, and labor estimates for rebuilds, retrofits, upgrades, and other service based mechanical solutions.
    • Review RFPs, contracts, and statements of work to identify risks, gaps, and ambiguities.
    • Maintain standardized estimating tools including historical cost models, standard hours, and mechanical configuration datasets.
    • Consult with clients, vendors, and internal SMEs to validate assumptions and resolve technical questions.
  • Technical Documentation & Proposal Support
    • Develop technical proposal documentation, including:
      • Mechanical scope of work and System Descriptions
      • Manifests and equipment lists
      • Conceptual design inputs
      • Technical assumptions, exclusions, and clarifications
    • Support conceptual layouts, drawings, and technical packages in coordination with engineering and design teams.
    • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all customer required technical documents.
  • Cross Functional Collaboration
    • Work closely with Engineering, Services operations, and Sales to validate technical feasibility and ensure solutions meet functional and commercial requirements.
    • Participate in kickoff calls, reviews, technical discussions, risk evaluations, and proposal lifecycle handoffs.
    • Support the development of acceptance testing procedures and define acceptance criteria as needed.
    • Provide cross‑departmental backup support for Applications Engineering.
    • Assist with Services Engineering responsibilities on an as‑needed basis to support workload balance and project demands.
    • Serve as a backup resource for team members to maintain coverage and operational consistency.
    • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned in support of team and organizational objectives.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Identify opportunities to standardize common retrofit and rebuild scopes to improve consistency and reduce estimating cycle time.
    • Stay current on industry standards, mechanical design practices, and material handling technologies.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field required.
  • Minimum of 2 years mechanical applications engineering, esitmating or technical pre-sales engineering.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and hands on technical experience will be considered.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD required; 3D modeling experience preferred.
  • SAP or other ERP experience desired.
  • Experience in the material handling industry strongly preferred.

  • This position is eligible for hybrid work.
  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment using standard office equipment.
  • Noise levels are typically moderate.
  • Occasional visits to industrial and warehouse environments to support customer meetings, assess site conditions, or gather technical requirements. Safety protocols must be followed during such visits..

 

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity to type, handle documents, and manage office materials.
  • Ability to speak clearly and hear effectively.
  • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, and kneel as needed.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 lbs., and occasionally up to 50 lbs. Visual requirements include close, distance, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel
This role requires travel to customer sites to gather requirements, assess mechanical system conditions, and participate in customer and internal meetings. The candidate must be willing and able to travel as needed to support sales efforts – for example, to attend customer meetings, site visits, or company meetings.  The ability to secure a rental car and legally operate a motor vehicle is required for travel. For any international travel, the employee must have or be able to obtain a valid passport. Travel is estimated at approximately 10%.
