Job Summary
The Machine Shop Manager will be responsible for leading and managing the daily operations of the large, medium, and small machine shop departments that support the manufacturing of precision components for Giddings & Lewis product platforms and external OEM customers. This role ensures high-quality, on-time, and cost-effective production while promoting a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. This role requires a hands-on problem solver with a deep understanding of manufacturing processes, shop floor operations, and cross-functional collaboration. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting production, developing tooling and fixturing, implementing process improvements, and driving cost savings across operations.
Scope & Responsibilities
Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide daily leadership and oversight for all machine shop areas, ensuring efficient and productive operations across multiple departments.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate machining operations to meet production targets and delivery timelines. Develop outsource options, if in-house capabilities or capacities cannot meet delivery timelines.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, throughput, and cost reduction using Lean and Six Sigma principles.
- Champion product and process improvements in collaboration with engineering and production planning teams to optimize manufacturability and performance.
- Implement and maintain standardized work practices across departments, ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards.
- Take steps to achieve standard cost targets for manufactured components.
- Document and/or develop written work instructions for machine shop operations.
- Oversee training and development plans to ensure machinists and team members are technically skilled and capable of processes.
- Maintain and improve department 5S, tooling organization, material handling, and workflow efficiency across all machining cells.
- Lead root cause analysis efforts and corrective action implementation for quality or production-related issues.
- Monitor and report KPIs including on-time delivery, scrap rates, machine uptime, labor efficiency, and cost performance.
- Manage departmental budgets, labor resources, and equipment needs across large, medium, and small shop areas.
- Awareness of ISO management systems 9001 and 14001
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Business, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered (5–10 years of machine shop leadership).
- Strong background in CNC machining, grinding, setup, programming, and tooling across a range of machine sizes and types (horizontal/vertical mills, turning centers, grinders, etc.).
- Experience managing mixed-volume or custom machining operations within a machine tool, aerospace, or heavy equipment environment.
- Proven track record in team leadership, coaching, and performance management.
- Lean manufacturing, 5S, Six Sigma, Kanban experience preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to use data and metrics to drive decision-making.
- Effective communication, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated skill with ERP/MRP systems, MS Office, and CAD/CAM tools.
