Logistics Technician

Accountability:

The Logistics Technician is responsible for the machine tool and parts shipping, product parts storage inside the facility and receiving parts/components shipments from suppliers as well as, safe and secure part/components transport within the facility from storage areas to the assembly floor. 

Scope and Responsibilities:

Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Proactively attains a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
  • Perform duties as crane operator and hookup in the plant.  From a variety of slings and cables, select and attach proper one to be used in lifting and transporting material.
  • Attach sling, rope, magnet, chain or other hooking device to part or parts to be lifted onto machine tool or in the assembly or disassembly of a machine.  This requires extensive cross knowledge of both current and legacy product lines.  Parts vary in size, form and weight, 41,000 pounds and up with many requiring delicate handling (i.e. runway, saddle supports, rails, headstocks, saddles, table and saddle assemblies, rotary tables, etc.)  Parts are of cast iron, steel and other metals.  Proper placement of sling or hooking device is important to obtain proper balance in order to prevent tipping, tilting, or swinging.  Must be acquainted with various methods of hitching.
  • Inspects and documents on crane safety check sheets in every area before using.  Alerts Maintenance or Safety department with any concerns.
  • Attends company mandated Crane Certification sessions to stay current with safety rules and regulations.
  • Operate overhead bridge crane with remote control to lift, transport, and accurately position parts, equipment, or assembled material.  Must know limitation and potential of crane and hooking devices.  Lift, transport, turn, and position parts or containers as required.  Responsible for hookup, transportation, and placement of parts.
  • Determine proper placing of skids in storage and stacking when setting parts down.  Protect all finished surfaces from chains, scratching, bumping, denting, or chipping.  Assist machine operator in making simple set-ups where some judgment is required to comply with instructions or prescribed routines.
  • Operate trucks as required to transport material within the company.  Clear all obstacles when moving loads and sound warning bell should personnel be in the path of the load.  Detect and report faulty equipment and material. 
  • Maintain working area in clean and orderly manner.  Report any unsafe conditions to proper supervision immediately.  Perform other related duties as assigned or directed.
  • Due to company needs, Technician may be required to come during off shifts to provide support for the needs of departments.
        • Parts Storage:
  • Perform a variety of duties in the storage area regarding the receipt, identification, storage, disbursement, and inventory of materials, castings, supplies, and equipment.  Work performed under the direction of a Coordinator.
  • Check materials, castings, supplies, etc., as received, assign bin or storage locations, paint identification number and store.  Select and deliver castings to department.  Review requisitions and expedite material to proper manufacturing area.
  • Must be familiar with applicable host and AS/RS SAP transactions, and proficient in the use of SAP's.  Within guidelines set up by supervisor, use the SAP transactions.
  • Take inventories and check shortages.  Notify proper personnel when inventory is low. 
  • Operate a variety of equipment required to move castings and parts, such as walking overhead crane, hand and electric truck, transfer cars, and other similar equipment.  Work may be both inside and outside.
  • Maintain records.  Keep work area in a clean and orderly manner.  Report any unusual conditions to proper supervision. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED; Parts moving equipment certification (crane, fork lift, etc.)

Experience:

  • Two years related experience and/or training safely and successfully handling moving of large complex parts for machine tool assembly.

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of SAP
  • Strong communication skills – both written and verbal.
  • Creative problem solving skills.
  • Strong, self-directed, independent work ethic.
  • Ability to work off shift as required
  • Ability and willingness to mentor/instruct employees on proper part handling with an emphasis on safety.
  • Willing to travel periodically as required.
