Accountability:

CNC Controls Application Engineer Intern for the metal cutting machine tool business. Under supervision, job responsibilities will encompass the application software engineering design required for the machine tool products developed and produced for Fives, interacting with other business functions, and working with assembly build teams on the shop floor.  

The intern will be exposed to the engineering design process which includes understanding input requirements, analysis, design, test, and shop follow-up. This will be achieved by being given assignments of increasing scope and responsibility over the course of an internship at Fives Giddings & Lewis. The intern may participate in Continuous Improvement and Customer Satisfaction activities, root cause problem analysis, design review techniques.  The intern will also be exposed to functional areas outside of Engineering to gain an understanding of the machine tool business.

Scope and Responsibilities:

Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Proactively attains a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
  • Cross-train with the Test Engineering group to obtain product knowledge required for software design.
  • Opportunities to participate in the design and testing of software and CNC/PLC control systems.
  • Troubleshoots software issues when required in support of product startup.
  • Participate in cross-functional design teams spanning the entire product life cycle, beginning with the specification stage, and continuing through implementation to product shipment.
  • Works with Electrical Design engineering to select and layout hardware, including controls, amplifiers, digital input and output cards, and other components.
  • Learn basic concepts and architecture of both Siemens and Fanuc CNC systems.
  • Promotes “right first time” content with appropriate risk mitigation plans when required.
  • Improves overall company efficiency by participation in special assignments and projects.

Education/Certification:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university – Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or other related engineering degree.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency status (green card).

Experience:

  •   Minimum 1 year of college study in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science related degree.

Skills:

  • Effective problem-solving skills, targeted toward solving technical problems.
  • Ability to learn to interpret hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical schematics. 
  • Background in the development of PLC software is a plus.
  • Ability to work well with people and have good communication skills.
  • Self-driven and motivated to succeed.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word
  • Visual Basic, C++, C#, Visual Studio, and web-based programming a plus.
