Fives Services Gulf is the Fives service Centre for the Middle East, with a team of 160 people based in Bahrain, UAE and Saudi Arabia, Fives Services Gulf provides local customer service, project execution support and local parts sourcing, in addition to carrying out refit and modernization projects, audits and technical assistance on customer sites. A team is also dedicated to the maintenance of equipment in operation at our customers' plants.

Position Summary
The Conventional Machinist is responsible for operating manual lathe machines, universal milling machines, and horizontal boring machines to produce precision components according to engineering drawings and tolerances. This position requires advanced experience in reading technical drawings, understanding GD&T, selecting correct machining processes, determining job routing, and choosing appropriate cutting tools. The machinist must independently plan the job, identify missing information, and coordinate with engineering when clarification is required.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Machining Operations
- Set up and operate manual lathe, universal milling, and horizontal boring machines.
- Perform machining tasks including turning, facing, threading, grooving, drilling, tapping, milling, boring, slotting, and precision finishing.
- Calculate cutting parameters manually (speed, feed, DOC) depending on material type and tooling.
- Adjust setups, feeds, and speeds based on machine condition and job requirements.
- Technical Drawing Interpretation
- Read and interpret: Engineering drawings & Dimensional tolerances (ISO / ANSI)
- GD&T symbols (flatness, straightness, roundness, profile, concentricity, perpendicularity, etc.)
- Datum systems and machining references
- Identify missing or conflicting drawing details and escalate for clarification.
- Job Routing & Process Planning
- Determine correct machining sequence based on part geometry and tolerances.
- Decide which machine is suitable (lathe / milling / boring).
- Define workholding and fixturing requirements.
- Plan roughing, semi-finishing, and finishing operations.
- Modify the machining plan based on real-time workshop conditions.
- Recommend improvements to reduce cycle time and increase output.
- Tool Selection & Ordering
Select appropriate cutting tools and inserts:
- Turning inserts (CNMG, DNMG, VNMG, etc.)
- End mills, face mills, boring bars, reamers
- Identify tool wear and take corrective action.
- Request special tools or inserts when needed.
- Propose tool upgrades for improved performance.
- Inspection & Quality Control
Perform dimensional inspection using:
- Vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, inside micrometers
- Dial indicators, height gauges
- Maintain required precision (±0.02 mm typical, ±0.005 mm for high-accuracy jobs).
- Conduct first article inspection and in-process quality checks.
- Maintenance & Safety
- Perform daily machine housekeeping, oil checks, lubrication, and chip removal.
- Report machine abnormalities immediately.
- Follow all safety procedures (PPE, LOTO, safe lifting).
- Ensure compliance with HSEQ standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Technical Diploma or Certificate in Machining / Mechanical Technology.
Minimum 5–10 years experience with:
- Manual Lathe
- Universal Milling
- Horizontal Boring Machine
- Strong GD&T interpretation skills.
- Advanced knowledge of tool materials, insert grades, and machining parameters.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Skills
- Experience machining welded parts, castings, and heavy components.
- Knowledge of fixture design or custom clamping.
- Understanding of heat treatment, hardness, and machining allowances.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and tool requests.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Basic user of MS Office
